Childhood Obesity and Cultural Influences, a New Chapter by Dr. Marilyn Stern

Multicultural Approaches to Health and Wellness in Americais a unique two-volume set that describes and compares the variety of cultural approaches to health practiced by people of varying cultural heritages with a traditional Western approach to health care and medicine.  In volume 2 (Mental health and mind-body connections), Dr. Marilyn Stern, with co-authors Jacqueline Woods and Stephen Trapp, examine obesity and minority patients' health beliefs using an intersectionality framework, that is, how socially constructed identities drive systemic social and health disparities.   They also review how cultural health beliefs and health messages can provide health care professionals with culturally relevant tools in the prevention and treatment of obesity in minority children.
